Summerhill's century-old houses, and quiet, tree-lined streets have made it one of Toronto's premier neighbourhoods. It is conveniently located along the Yonge Street corridor, which provides Summerhill residents with easy walking and subway access to Toronto's downtown core.

The Summerhill neighbourhood in central Toronto was named after "Summer Hill" house, built in 1842 by Canadian transportation baron Charles Thompson.

In the 1880s, the North Toronto Railway Station was established on Yonge Street and the neighbourhood of Summerhill quickly developed around it.

Summerhill real estate consists of semi-detached and detached Victorian houses, and detached Edwardian style houses, built between 1880 and 1915. Many of these Summerhill homes do not include driveways; however permit street parking is available from the city for a nominal annual fee.

Summerhill real estate also contains a large number of modern townhouses, and a handful of low-rise luxury condominium apartment buildings, built mostly in the 1980's and 1990's.
